About the Ozarks

Living in and around Springfield, Missouri

Springfield is located in southwest Missouri, a short distance from several major metropolitan areas including St. Louis, Kansas City and Tulsa.

We are the home of many events and world-famous attractions including Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, the Route 66 Music Festival and we’re only a short drive from Branson. Located in the heart of the Ozarks—one of the country’s most scenic regions—Springfield offers fabulous entertainment, sites and shopping. Springfield features more than 600 restaurants, shopping facilities, attractions, cultural opportunities and special events year-round.

Springfield is within a 100-mile radius of more than 7,500 miles of shoreline along accessible lakes, floatable streams and rivers. Excellent hunting, camping and fishing are found throughout the area, all among rolling hills and clear spring-fed streams. One favorite site is Table Rock Lake, noted for its clean, uncrowded shores and hidden inlets.

Each year residents and visitors alike get more for their dollar in Springfield. According to the American Chamber of Commerce Research Association, Springfield’s cost of living is 6.7 points below the national average. Sales tax in Springfield (as of Jan. 1, 1999) is 6.475 percent and the lodging tax is 4.5 percent.

Part of Springfield’s uniqueness comes from its climate and four distinctive seasons. Nestled atop the Ozark Mountain Plateau, the city enjoys a relaxed climate with milder seasons than the upland plains or prairie sections of the state. Springfield offers an abundance of sunshine, low wind velocity, mild temperatures and favorable humidity. The average annual precipitation here is 41 inches with 15 inches of snow.

Springfield’s climate and low cost of living have helped give rise to the city’s population of 149,811 (1996 U.S. Estimated Census). Urban areas immediately outside the city limits combine for a total population of 294,526. Springfield is the third largest city in the state of Missouri.

The Springfield area offers a wide variety of opportunities for living, working, learning and playing.
