About Cox Medical Explorers

If you are considering a career in health care or medicine, Cox Medical Explorers is a great way to learn what it takes. Cox Medical Explorers Post 229 started in 1969 as the first medical exploring post in the United States. Monthly membership meetings feature a health care speaker from an area of the Cox system. Our speakers represent a variety of health care careers - from Air Care and ER to nursing and surgery.

Students ages 16 to 20 from southwest Missouri who are interested in learning about health care careers are eligible to join Cox Medical Explorers.  Members are required to attend monthly membership meetings in order to be eligible to sign up for shadow clinical rotations at Cox North, Cox South and Cox Walnut Lawn. Rotations are available in a variety of clinical areas.

Students ages 14 to 20 are eligible to join Cox Teen Volunteers. Teens serve throughout the hospital and in our Child Care Centers. Many of these teens hope to pursue a health care career. Teen volunteers must be 14 years old and attending school. Dual membership is allowed. For more information about Teen Volunteers, please call 269-4169.

Exploring helps you decide if a health care career fits into your future and offers a non-traditional educational avenue. Many schools even give students academic credit hours for working as Medical Explorers. Cox Explorers also qualify for awards and cash scholarships.

Bad Weather?
Monthly meetings and clinical rotations may be cancelled due to bad weather.  All Cox Medical Explorer activities will be cancelled when Springfield Public Schools are cancelled due to poor weather. Please tune into KY3 television or KTTS radio after 3 p.m. if you have questions about cancellations due to the weather.
