Children, Adolescents and Families
Burrell Behavioral Health

Through a wide range of programming and professional staff,
Burrell Behavioral Health offers skilled assistance to children and teens experiencing emotional or behavioral health problems. The childrens continuum of care at Burrell has received an Award of Excellence from the National Council of Community Behavioral Healthcare. In addition, Burrell was selected for the Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services for Children and Their Families Program, administered through the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This six year, $9.3 million project, applied for and awarded cooperatively through the Missouri Department of Mental Health, will have a dramatic impact on the further development of Burrells, and the communitys, system of care for children, adolescents and families impacted by serious emotional disturbance.

Burrell offers 24-hour emergency services, seven days a week for children facing a crisis. Additionally, inpatient and outpatient services are available to address such problems as stress, school performance, peer issues, substance abuse and self esteem. For 24-hour crisis assistance, call 417/862-6555 or 1-800-494-7355.

Outpatient counseling and psychotherapy are available with licensed professional counselors, licensed clinical social workers and licensed psychologists. These services include individual, group and family therapy targeting problems commonly experienced by todays youth to help them receive the support of their families and friends, and remain educationally, vocationally and socially active. To increase awareness of mental health issues and to enhance accessibility of services, Burrell continues to develop partnerships within the community in the field of childrens health and human services. Child development education is being provided at 10 area Women, Infant and Children (WIC) Clinics in seven counties. Burrell also provides mental health screenings for Juvenile Court and the Greene County Division of Family Services. Public schools utilize Burrell to provide alcohol and drug assessments, screenings and counseling services within the school.

Burrell provides "Children First" services to parents who are divorcing or struggling with custody issues. This educational course is required by many of our court systems and allows an opportunity to focus on the childrens needs throughout and after the judicial process.

Childrens Day Treatment is an alternative to inpatient hospitalization and/or residential care for children who are withdrawn, adjusting to a loss or have excessive anxieties and fears. The program utilizes play therapy, creative skills and behavior modification strategies in a warm and supportive preschool-like environment.

Our Intensive In-Home Services have proven successful for families whose child or children are at risk of being removed from the natural family home due to abuse or neglect. Therapists provide crisis intervention to ensure child safety and stabilize the family. The staff observes family dynamics in the home and instructs families on how to make effective changes to prevent further abuse or neglect.

Our large Childrens Community-Based program provides a range of in-home services for youth with emotional or behavior disturbances. These services include intensive community services, in-home therapy and case management. These programs include a comprehensive evaluation based on a review of the psychiatric history and observations across the current home, school and community settings. Interventions implemented are tailored to the child and family's treatment goals. These may include anger management training, positive parenting skills, social skills training, behavioral charting, communication skills and problem solving/coping skills. The case managers assist families in accessing and coordinating services for their child.

The Adolescent Substance Abuse Program (CSTAR) is designed to free young people from substance abuse and dependency. We teach life and coping skills in a safe environment to interrupt the pattern of substance use.

For children and adolescents who have particularly severe problems, we have two options: Therapeutic Foster Homes, called "Professional Parent Homes" and our Residential Crisis Stabilization Units. Both are designed to replace the need for longer-term hospitalization and divert children from state hospital placement. Treatment may include psychiatric evaluation, psychological evaluation, medication management, nursing care, individual and family therapies and recreational therapy. Both programs are available for children and/or adolescents who have been abused, neglected or who are experiencing emotional disturbances, behavior disorders or mental illness. The Professional Parent homes provide a family environment that is therapeutic to help all ages of children, but particularly younger children, while the residential facilities are for older elementary aged children and teens. Our Family Focus program provides in-home support to the youth and their family to expedite the transition back into the home. Family Focus helps prepare the family to better manage the youth in the future to prevent or reduce the need for further out-of-home placements.

Child-Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry at Cox North is an acute care program for children ages 6 to 17 who are experiencing emotional, behavioral or developmental problems that can no longer be safely dealt with at home or in the community.
