Family Practice Residency

About Our Program
Cox Family Practice Residency Program

CoxHealth

With a medical staff of nearly 470 physicians, CoxHealth is the sponsoring hospital for the residency program.

In recent years, Cox has been twice recognized as a Top 100 Hospital in the United States by HCIA and Mercer Consulting. Other honors include being named one of the nation's Fastest Fifty growing health care providers and Top 100 Integrated Health Networks by Modern Healthcare magazine.

CoxHealth is unique with its strategy of integration, uniting various providers with services ranging from behavioral health to home health, into one network of care designed to meet the needs of more than 750,000 people in southwest Missouri and northern Arkansas. The Cox campuses consist of Cox North with 309 beds; Cox South with 561 beds, including a 116-bed extension of the South campus at Cox Walnut Lawn.

Cox North is the primary location of the residency program, and is centered in an area with an enormous need for primary care. Cox North includes The Center for Addictions, psychiatry services, Cox Diabetes Center, Cox Senior Health Center, Cox Occupational Medicine and Workers' Compensation Center, as well as general medical and surgical services, urgent care and a 24-hour emergency department. The revitalization of the north Springfield community is attracting new medical practices, businesses and renovation of historical areas.

Clinic Site

The Family Medical Care Center, located in Cox North, is the base of our clinical practice as family physicians. We currently have 29,000 square feet, including 40 exam rooms, offices and lab. Currently, we provide health care to more than 13,000 patients.

All faculty physicians and residents see patients on a regular basis each week in our center, and each resident becomes the primary physician for a number of families and follows these families throughout his or her residency.

Highlights

The Cox Family Practice Residency Program provides residents with the full spectrum of the family practice experience, including operative obstetrics and training for rural practice. Three to four week clerkships are available for medical students to provide hands-on experience with residents and faculty.

To further enhance the learning experience, formal conferences include:

Morning Report - 4 sessions per week
Grand Rounds - 1 hour per month
Didactic Half Day - 3 hours per week

Evaluation

Every good educational program must make efforts to scrutinize progress. We have a series of evaluation efforts as described below:

Program - The program as a whole has been reviewed by experienced consultants from the Residency Assistance Program of the AAFP. The program has received full accreditation from the Residency Review Committee of the ACGME. The entire faculty conducts an annual review of the program's mission, goals and objectives.

Rotations - Every rotation is evaluated by each resident completing the learning experience. This feedback is used to regularly adjust and improve the teaching environment.

Faculty - The residents formally review faculty on an annual basis. This information helps faculty to identify areas in which teaching techniques can be improved.

Residents - All residents take the American Board of Family Practice In-Training Examination annually. This allows each resident to judge his/her individual progress, and for the program to judge its overall educational effectiveness. Residents receive ongoing feedback during rotations from faculty, and a written evaluation upon completion of each rotation. Each resident has a family practice faculty advisor who reviews progress with them and with the faculty on a quarterly basis.

Summary

Practicing medicine is one of the most rewarding professional adventures. Family medicine delicately balances the fascination of discovery with the privilege of close personal relationships that families bestow only upon their personal physicians.

The Cox Family Practice Residency Program endeavors to teach the best of science to prepare its graduates for the difficult but intriguing work of diagnosis and treatment. We also make every effort to develop the artist's intellect in our residents so they can fully appreciate, practically utilize, and diligently protect the trust their patients grant them.

We carry out our educational program in an atmosphere of pleasure. It goes without saying that the family physician has to work hard. But the family physician in our program has the opportunity to work hard and experience the joy of learning in an environment of faculty and staff members who appreciate their importance in the future of our world.
