Wheeler Heart and Vascular Center
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death and disability
in the United States. The vision of the Wheeler Heart and Vascular
Center is to provide a complete array of comprehensive services for
all cardiology outpatient needs in one location to improve ease of
access and convenience for this population. The Center is founded on
the principles of wellness, prevention, early detection and outpatient
treatment modalities with state-of-the-art technology in one single,
point-of-service design. Wheeler Heart and Vascular Center supports
CoxHealths special style of cardiovascular care by bringing together
under one roof, all of our outpatient cardiac programs and services.
Services provided in the new facility will include:
Lower Level:
- Cardiac Support Center: This 20-bed outpatient
unit will provide infusion therapy and behavior modification to assist
patients with congestive
heart failure. This program significantly impacts keeping patients
out of the hospital by keeping them out of acute heart failure.
The area will be bright and spacious, allowing patients to socialize, play
puzzles, and watch television, etc., during their treatment period.
The current average treatment lasts approximately six hours. The
frequency of treatment is individualized; some receive treatment once/month,
others twice per week. Previously located on ground level of the
Medical Arts Center, the Cardiac Support Center treats an estimated 200 patients
per month.
- Lipid Clinic: There is compelling evidence that demonstrates
reduced risk of cardiac events (heart attacks) and death in patients
with
heart disease through lipid management therapy. High cholesterol is a known
modifiable risk factor, which means we can change this risk factor
through appropriate management. The lipid clinic provides a comprehensive,
defined, specific, individualized lipid (cholesterol) management
program for patients which includes lab work with immediate results, dietician
counseling, behavior modification and medication therapy.
- Coumadin
Clinic: A patient focused clinic which will allow a more efficient
way to manage patients blood thinning medications.
- Pre-admission and
lab: Patients will be able to go directly from their physicians office
to pre-admission for procedures and laboratory
tests performed in the Wheeler Heart and Vascular Center. This will consolidate
all outpatient cardiac services within one user-friendly location.
- Heart Healthy Café: This inviting area will offer heart
healthy dining options to patient families, rehab clients and other
clinic
patrons.
Lobby Level:
- Heart and Vascular Administrative offices
- Conference rooms for community
education.
- Pharmacy including a drive through window.
- Outpatient Cardiac and
Vascular Catheterization Lab: The current catheterization labs are
housed within Cox South providing service to both outpatients
(elective cases) and inpatients. The current process mixes acute
patients coming into the hospital with a heart attack, unstable patients within
the hospital, and elective cases within the hospital, with the
outpatient
population. The mixture of these patient populations is at times
inefficient, resulting in multiple interactions at many department levels throughout
the organization. An outpatient cath lab will improve these efficiencies
by not mixing higher acuity patients within the flow of these
exams. All outpatient diagnostic catheterizations will be performed at
the Wheeler
Heart and Vascular Center with an expected stay of six hours
vs. 12-24 in the hospital. This space is designed for a total of four labs: two
cardiac cath labs; one cardiac/vascular lab (for kidneys, legs,
feet, etc.) and one lab for future technology. The vascular lab will play a
large role in diagnosis of peripheral vascular disease, which
is
an underdiagnosed population.
- Library/Education Resource area: Across the foyer
from the Cath Lab, families and Heart Center patrons, patients, and
visitors are
welcome to explore information about heart health and the prevention and
treatment of heart disease. The Center will provide up-to-date reference
materials, expanded audiovisual capabilities, and Internet-linked computers
for
searches. There will also be an area with representation from
our local American Heart Association.
2nd Floor: Cox Plaza Hotel.
3rd Floor:
- Noninvasive Diagnostic Testing: Diagnostic
testing will include outpatient cardiac nuclear scanning, echocardiography,
stress testing,
EKG, Holter
monitoring, Pacemaker Clinic.
- Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation: Rehab
will remain in this location but expand to meet continued growth.
Current volume exceeds 20,000
visits per year with growth expected to grow to more than 30,000 in the next
5-10 years. New services will include rehabilitation for peripheral
vascular disease (PVD). Though PVD is a chronic disease, it often goes
undiagnosed and untreated. Rehab will begin to provide services for
rehabilitation
of this patient population.
4th Floor Level:
- Ferrell-Duncan Clinic physician offices, including cardiologists, cardiovascular
surgeons and vascular surgeons.
