Volunteer Spotlight
In 1985 Joyce Baker was between jobs and decided to do some
volunteering. When Cox South opened, she began her volunteering. She provided
a variety of service, from working in ER to taking the Cheer Cart around
to our bedfast patients. Then she went back to work. When she retired
in 1995, her friend Lee Wydock persuaded her to come back to volunteer
again at the hospital with her. She claims that Lee talks her into all
kinds of things!
Joyce is originally from Garden City, Kan. When she
was 14, she moved to this area when her family bought a farm. She graduated
from school in Marshfield. In her employment days, she worked as an executive
secretary and was a real estate broker for 40 years.
She has one son, Jeff Baker, who resides in Springfield.
Recently she has added a new member to the family. A puppy named Liberty
Bell, nicknamed Libby, who has been keeping Joyce very busy.
Joyce is a member of the Show-Me Walkers, a walking club.
Most members walk at the Battlefield Mall. She attends the National Avenue
Christian Church. She also serves on the Cox Auxiliary Board, as the member-at-large
for Cox South. If you have been ill or in the hospital, you likely received
a get well card from the Auxiliary. Joyce was the lady who sent it to
you.
If you ask Joyce why she volunteers she will tell you, "I
enjoy being around people and helping people." You can see her smiling
face and twinkling eyes on Tuesday afternoons delivering flowers and on
Thursday mornings, with her friend Lee, in the Outpatient center working
at the information desk.
